Spring Mermaid Spotlight

Posted by coachlisa on May 30, 2010

Women First Swimming always likes to shine the spotlight on deserving mermaids from the program. Over the years we’ve spotlighted perennial die-hards Sarah Pruiett, Joyce LaBaw and newbies like Lisa Paulson, Nydia Heintz and Katherine Mathis.

Both Coach Sara and Lisa selected Veronica Hernandez for this spring’s Mermaid Spotlight based on her exceptional attendance and improvement over the last year. Veronica recalls starting the program last summer and ‘barely getting through the 200yard warm up’. Today, Veronica has overcome the intimidation and strengthened her once weak leg of the triathlon to push to the front of the pack. We’re proud of Veronica not just for her improvement but her spirit of advocacy — she has inspired her dad to join her in the Couples triathlon for his first tri. Go Team Hernandez! We’re cheering you on!

Spring session wraps up

Posted by coachlisa on May 30, 2010

Another fantastic spring session wrapped up this past Saturday. Through all the challenges in pool changes and cancellations, I’m proud of the progress and positive attitudes demonstrated by both new and veteran mermaids. A big thank you to our amazing team of Lisa’s Angels – Coaches Sara, Sarah and Huddie.

Stay tuned for our Attendance Award winner who will be rewarded with free registration in the summer program…

Kudos also to Sandy for helping coordinate and support the Open Water swim last week. Coach Sara was out in the kayak and then snapped a shot of happy mermaids for the Women First Facebook group.

As always, we welcome feedback, comments or suggestions about the class or coaches, or hearing your story about how the class has personally helped you. Thanks to Les Dase for her most recent Testimonial now posted on our Testimonials page. I continue to aim to provide you with a fun and beneficial swim program.

For those of you who are interested in getting my book Triathlon for Women, local book store Book People carries the title.

Finally, we are already planning for the summer class, so drop Coach Lisa an email if you are interested.

All the best everyone at next week’s Danskin Triathlon, or other summer tris.

happy swimming,
Coach Lisa

Sat May 22 and 29 back at Balcones

Posted by coachlisa on May 21, 2010

Reminder about the change in pools for this Saturday’s swim and next week too (May 22 and May 29). Dick Nichols has some mechanical issues so…

Tomorrow’s class will at Balcones Neighborhood Pool at 12012 Amherst Dr in Northwest Austin.

Coach Sara and Coach Sarah will be eagerly waiting on deck for you to start your weekend off with a great swim. I know everyone is disappointed about no vertical kicking!

We’re also on Facebook where updates and class photos can be viewed.

Sandy’s Open Water Swim at Decker Lake

Posted by coachlisa on May 18, 2010

Fellow mermaid Sandy Morris has organized a kayak supervised Open Water Swim at Decker Lake on Wednesday May 26 meeting at 5:30 pm, swim to start at 6:00 pm.

Location: Decker Lake

Directions: when you enter the park go right all the way to the end and swing toward the dam. We’ll swim from the ramp along the dam for .25 miles then back.

She has friends with kayak for safety support, however she is looking for three more kayakers if you know anyone. Contact Sandy if you are interested.

Bring water noodles if you have them, your swim cap, sunscreen, goggles, and your towel. It’s also helpful to have flip flops you can get wet.
