Winter Swim set to start Saturday

Posted by coachlisa on January 14, 2011

Greetings Mermaids-in-training,

Just a reminder that the Women First winter swim program will start again tomorrow (Saturday January 15) at 8:30 am rain or shine at Balcones Neighborhood Pool at 12012 Amherst Dr in Northwest Austin. Class will only be cancelled in the event of thunder/lightning or snow/below zero temperatures. For those new, it is a heated pool with full showers and change rooms available.

Please welcome new mermaids:

Susan Sandoval
Allyson Carter
Lisa Retrum
Laura Estes
Laura Torres
Marybeth Wargo

Again, like the fall session, we’ll offer a FREE FUTURE CLASS to the mermaid with 100% attendance (so if you’re only in for 6 classes, your attendance record is based on attending those 6 classes). Allison Laymon was our fall winner.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please let Sara or I know.

Happy swimming,
Coach Lisa

Having trouble with flip turns?

Posted by sara on January 5, 2011

Having trouble getting the hang of flip turns? While they aren’t necessarily during an open water swim, flip turns can aid your pool workout by maintaining momentum and working on breath control. The underwater pushoff also adds a low-impact strength move to your workout.

Mermaid Pam shared this interesting tutorial that breaks the motion of the flip turn into a five video sequence. Next time you head to the pool for a swim, grab a noodle and try this technique.
Part 1:

In the upcoming Women First Swimming session we will learn both the flip turn and the open turn.

Women First video analysis

Posted by sara on January 3, 2011

A feature we’ve added to the Women First program this last year is an opportunity for video analysis. Armed with my trusty Flip camera and underwater housing I record a short video of each swimmer in motion.

Sarah P. has allowed me to share her video in this post so others can see an example of our video analysis. No fancy editing or special effects but it does offer a viewpoint we can’t gain pool-side.

After recording your stroke underwater the videos are posted to YouTube to an unlisted link. Coaches then give you individual feedback and suggest appropriate drills and exercises.

Since we think this is a such a valuable tool, this underwater analysis is a service we are happy to offer for free. The next session starts in less than two weeks, email Lisa if you’re interested in joining us!
